Blackbaud helps nonprofits use mobile to do more good.

“With Appcelerator, developers can hit the ground running because they already have the necessary skills. We deliver faster, and because we target multiple platforms at the same time, costs are lower.”

Blackbaud’s Mobile Story

Watch Larry Mishkin, Vice President of Engineering at Blackbaud, discuss how they are using mobile and the Appcelerator Platform to help nonprofits do more around the world.

The Need

Blackbaud is the number one provider of software and services to nonprofits worldwide. As consumers increasingly move towards mobile, nonprofits too must adapt to reach donors on any platform, no matter where they are. Recognizing the growing demand and potential for organizations to receive donations by teams in the field, Blackbaud needed a way to provide these on-the-go workers with the information and tools to do their jobs faster and more effectively.

“We did try development with native SDKs, and it works – it’s just a much longer development cycle, it costs more to get the product to market and it’s harder to make changes quickly.”

The Results

Blackbaud deployed the Appcelerator Platform to create a suite of new apps. Developers were able to use existing skills to immediately begin delivering results. According to VP of Engineering Larry Mishkin, “Developers are scarce right now – mobile developers are even more so. But because we have Appcelerator, I can bring somebody in who just has JavaScript, HTML, and CSS, and train them up quickly.”

Blackbaud also began using analytics to better understand how their apps were used. According to Mishkin, “Mobile analytics allow us to get ahead. You want to have a good reputation in the App Store and the Play store. You really can’t do that if you’re flying blind and don’t know how the app is being used.” The Blackbaud team uses analytics to proactively identify and fix problems and also to inform product decisions. Says Mishkin, “The analytics let you see all of that to help you deliver features that will delight users.”

Together, the new apps have helped enrich Blackbuad’s software by allowing nonprofits to access and update constituent data from their mobile device, manage on-site events and process payments from anywhere. Describing how one of the apps was received Mishkin explained, “Blackbaud MobilePay has been a huge, huge hit. We introduced it at our conference last year and when the doors opened to the time the doors closed, you could not get to our was wall-to-wall people.”

The results for Blackbuad’s customers have been streamlined processes, increased constituent touchpoints, and higher donation numbers – all letting them have a bigger positive impact for their causes.

“Appcelerator is responsive, has cool technology, and is looking to the future. Those are the qualities I look for in a partner.”
