Appcelerator/IDC Mobile Report Finds Amazon Kindle Fire Launching as Leading Android Tablet for Developers in North America

November 14, 2011 by bfreedman

Survey of 2,160 Developers Sees Kindle Fire Interest on Par with iPad in April 2010; Microsoft Moves Decisively Ahead of RIM Through Nokia Partnership to Challenge Apple

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CALIF. and FRAMINGHAM, MASS. – November 14, 2011 – Appcelerator®, the leading integrated mobile platform for rapidly developing native and HTML5 mobile web applications using open web technologies, and industry-leading analyst firm International Data Corporation (IDC), today announced results from a new joint survey of 2,160 Appcelerator developers around the world.  Findings reveal that Amazon’s new Kindle Fire edged Samsung Galaxy Tab as the number one most popular Android Tablet in North America, on par with interest for the iPad prior to its launch in April 2010, and second only to the Galaxy Tab globally with developers.  Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 also decisively moved ahead of RIM’s BlackBerry OS to become the clear number three mobile OS behind iOS and Android.

Appcelerator and IDC also continued their research into how companies are making the move from the web to mobile.  This quarter, the report dives deep into understanding the priorities companies are making with their mobile strategy and how mobile is fundamentally transforming customer relationships. The full report is available free for download: http://bit.ly/q4-2011-report .

"The third major mobile OS after iOS and Android is now clearly Windows, driven largely by the Microsoft / Nokia partnership and underscored by the new Nokia Lumia 800," noted Scott Ellison, VP Mobile & Connected Consumer Platforms at IDC.  "Amazon has shown exceptional early success in appealing to developers with the Kindle Fire, showing that price and differentiation are keys to competing  in the crowded Android tablet space, rather than simply chasing the iPad market."

The Rise of Amazon, Microsoft, and Samsung … and an Improved Outlook for Nokia

As the mobile industry advances, contenders are finding success by securing new footholds and partnerships to compete against Apple’s dominance.  Amazon announced the Kindle Fire, a smaller, cheaper Android-based tablet that leverages its large content library while Microsoft’s Window’s Phone 7 is building strong European developer enthusiasm thanks to its Nokia partnership.  Developers and businesses gave high marks to these moves, which contrast sharply against BlackBerry OS, BlackBerry’s QNX-based PlayBook, and webOS, all of which collapsed in interest with developers this past quarter.  Below are the topline findings from this quarter’s report:

  • Amazon’s new Kindle Fire ignites developer interest.  When surveyed among 15 Android Tablets, the low-cost, content-rich eReader was second only to the Samsung Galaxy Tab globally in developer interest.  A regional breakdown shows Amazon edging Samsung in North America for the top slot.  At 49% very interested in North America, the Kindle Fire is just 4 points less than where interest was in the iPad prior to its launch in April 2010.
  • Appcelerator and IDC found in January 2011 that among developers price was the single most important factor for Android Tablets to compete successfully against the iPad.  Fast forward to November and developers cite price again as the leading reason for interest in the Kindle Fire.   Rounding out the top 5 tablets, respondents eye Amazon’s rich content ecosystem, Appstore, target demographic, and eCommerce integration as the key reasons for interest in the new eReader.
  • When considering Kindle Fire’s potential drawbacks, fragmentation and lack of features like camera and geo-location were the two top concerns cited by developers.  Assuming Amazon sells well this holiday season, Android developers will need to consider yet another set of different capabilities.  The difference this time?  Google will be less able to exert control over Amazon’s divergent Android path.
  • Windows Phone 7 separated from the pack to become the clear number three mobile OS this quarter.  The OS climbed 8 points to 38% of respondents saying they are “very interested” in the platform — the highest ever for Microsoft.
  • Microsoft is enjoying symbiotic success with Nokia.  When asked why developers are more interested in Windows Phone 7 now than a year ago, a plurality (48%) are saying it is the Microsoft / Nokia partnership.  Nokia also received high marks for its new Lumia Windows Phone 7 smartphone announcement last month.  Twenty-eight percent of developers said they are “very interested” in developing for the device.  This is more than double the interest in Nokia’s own Symbian and MeeGo OSes since Appcelerator began reporting mobile platform interest in January 2010.
  • This quarter saw a sharp fall-off in developers reporting that they are "very interested" in RIM offerings with BlackBerry OS phones dropping 7 points to 21% and PlayBook QNX-based tablets dropping 6 points to 13%.  Put another way, there is now more interest in Nokia’s new Lumia Windows Phone lineup than RIM’s smartphones.
  • HTML5 continues to keep developer interest.  Sixty-six percent of developers are very interested in building HTML5 mobile websites, the same as last quarter.
  • Connected TV app development interest continues to slide.  A year ago, 44% of developers were very interested in developing for Google TV.  Even with a second version announced last month, only 20% expressed the same enthusiasm for Google TV this round.  Apple TV however saw a smaller decline from 40% a year ago to 27% today.
  • iOS continues to reign at number one with 91% of respondents saying they are “very interested” in developing for the iPhone, followed by the iPad at 88%.  Apple continued to hold onto its number one position in part due to iOS 5, which was cited as the most significant announcement this past quarter.
  • Android phones fell nearly 4 points to 83% while tablets fell nearly 6 points to 68%.  While the drop was likely due in part to renewed interest in iOS 5, developers nevertheless saw Samsung’s rise to the number one smartphone manufacturer as the second most significant development of the past quarter after iOS 5.

A Deeper Look at Mobile Priorities across the Mobile Relationship Lifecycle

Over the past couple quarters, Appcelerator and IDC have been analyzing how businesses are making the move from the web to mobile.  Earlier this year, we discussed how companies were maturing through several phases of adoption.  This quarter, we asked developers and businesses to rank 23 mobile objectives for their most recent application.  We then clustered this analysis into what we call the “mobile relationship lifecycle” to define objectives in 4 areas: reach, engagement, loyalty, and monetization.

  • Reach: Businesses view deploying to multiple devices with native applications and mobile websites as the number one priority.  Making the transition more efficient by leveraging a company’s resources also ranked high.
  • Engagement: Building applications that are easy-to-use with a native user interface was the next most important objective, followed by application performance.  Both are seen as key to driving engagement with users and echo the general sentiment that application utility is critical.  These core concerns trumped even media, location and social features in priority.
  • Loyalty: Application notifications and using analytics to measure application feature usage ranked in the middle of the pack for most respondents.
  • Monetization: Advertising still trumps in-application purchasing as a preferred monetization model.  When it comes to mobile commerce, the top priority is making payments easy.

A complete breakdown of these trends and a more detailed analysis is available online. To access the Appcelerator / IDC Q4, 2011 Mobile Report, please visit: http://bit.ly/q4-2011-report.

A Year of Explosive Growth
Since Appcelerator’s last round of funding in October 2010, the company has been on a rapid growth trajectory.  In 12 months, Appcelerator has progressed by an order of magnitude in every area:

  • Developers: including its acquisition of Aptana in January, Appcelerator now counts 1.6 million developers in its ecosystem.
  • Apps: Appcelerator is now the largest 3rd-party publisher of mobile applications in both the Apple and Android marketplaces with more than 30,000 mobile applications published to date, a 6-fold increase over 2010.

Appcelerator Acquires Particle Code to Become the Leading Integrated Native Application and HTML5 Mobile Web Platform

October 21, 2011 by bfreedman

Acquisition Solidifies Unified Platform Approach; Extends HTML5 Mobile Web Opportunity to Appcelerator Developers

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CALIF. – October 24, 2011 – Appcelerator®, the leading integrated mobile platform for rapidly developing native and mobile web applications using open web technologies, today announced that it has entered into an agreement to acquire Particle Code, the DEMO God 2010 award-winning mobile gaming and HTML5 development platform. The acquisition enables Appcelerator to expand its world-class platform used by over 1.6 million developers to become the first mobile platform to offer an integrated native, hybrid, and HTML5 web application solution. The move accelerates Appcelerator’s position as the leading cross-platform development framework, now able to offer both web and native app development from a singular code base to developers in every app category. The Particle Code team has joined Appcelerator’s iOS, Android, and HTML5 core platform group in Mountain View. The acquisition is the second this year for Appcelerator following its acquisition of Aptana in January.

An Open, Integrated Alternative to Increasingly Fragmented Approaches

The Particle Code acquisition allows Appcelerator to fast-track the build out of its open source flagship platform, Appcelerator Titanium™, beyond native iOS and Android mobile applications and into HTML5 mobile web and gaming. This provides a path for developers concerned about increasing fragmentation in the market between Adobe’s Flash, native development and a variety of HTML5 frameworks. By enabling both web and native mobile application development from one singular codebase, Appcelerator allows developers to bridge the divide and create a platform-agnostic mobile strategy that will be optimized on every device and evolve with the ecosystem moving forward, regardless of how the platform wars shake out.

“The Particle Code acquisition is a big win for mobile developers across the board,” explained Jeff Haynie, CEO, Appcelerator. “As fragmentation among proprietary mobile vendors increases, Appcelerator offers an open source, integrated mobile platform as a better approach for unifying cross-platform native and HTML5 mobile web development.”

“Game and rich media developers are notoriously picky about performance, demanding that apps deliver a first-class experience on every device. We’re excited to bring these technical capabilities to Appcelerator and help Titanium go for the win in this disruptive space,” added Galia Benartzi, Particle Code’s CEO.

Appcelerator Achieves 500% Growth Over 12 months

As the race for mobile engineering talent continues heating up in Silicon Valley, the Particle Code acquisition is also notable for adding a dozen high-caliber developers to Appcelerator’s rapidly growing core platform team. The Particle Code team represents over 100 combined engineering years in every mobile, smartphone and desktop platform and was recently named a Top 10 Mobile Startup by Laptop Magazine. Appcelerator now tops 100 employees, a five-fold increase since closing its last funding round a year ago.

Appcelerator is also extending its lead as the most widely-used cross-platform solution on the market.  Titanium now powers 30,000 applications including NBC’s iPad app, which reached #1 on the Apple App Store last month, GetGlue, the #2 social networking app, Hotel Tonight, the #1 travel app, and Wunderlist the #1 productivity app. Appcelerator’s other top brand customers include Zipcar, ING, Merck, Medtronic, Michael’s Stores, Progressive, and GameStop among 1,000 customers with production applications built on Titanium.

“Appcelerator’s latest acquisition and its tremendous growth over the past year underscore that it is one of the key start-ups to watch given its increasingly central role in the mobile apps space,” noted Scott Ellison, IDC.

HTML5 mobile web offering will be rolled out in H1, 2012.

Appcelerator Unveils Open Mobile Marketplace To Unlock Mobile Innovation

September 19, 2011 by bfreedman

Extends Titanium Platform to Resolve Cross-Platform Fragmentation for Third Party Cloud and Software Developers; Launches with More Than 50 Leading Mobile Solutions, including PayPal, Facebook, Salesforce, Millennial Media, and Gaming Platform

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA – September 19, 2011 – Appcelerator®, the leading mobile cloud platform for rapidly developing native mobile, desktop, and tablet applications using web technologies, announced today at its CODESTRONG Developer Conference that it has launched “Appcelerator Open Mobile Marketplace,” for ISVs and cloud providers to sell software and solutions across multiple mobile operating systems on Appcelerator’s industry-leading Titanium™ platform and to its growing developer community of more than 1.5 million developers.  Open Mobile Marketplace (marketplace.appcelerator.com) launches with 50 leading mobile solutions, including PayPal, Salesforce, Millennial Media, and a full gaming platform.  The marketplace also enables any third party to sell native and HTML5 mobile modules, app templates, design elements, and cloud extensions to Appcelerator’s entire developer community.

"With over 1.5 million developers, Appcelerator has built the world’s largest cross-platform developer community,” explained Scott Ellison, IDC VP Mobile & Consumer Connected Platforms.  “The Open Mobile Marketplace presents an enormous opportunity for anyone looking to scale their business by leveraging the power of their ecosystem.”

Unlocking Mobile Innovation
Appcelerator’s Open Mobile Marketplace (“Marketplace”) addresses the larger mobile platform fragmentation problem currently facing the cloud and software development industry.  As computing moves to distributed, multiple platforms such as iOS and Android, it is becoming increasingly difficult for vendors to deliver their services consistently across these popular devices.  With Appcelerator’s use of open web standards, a robust platform with over 3,600 native features, and now Marketplace, cloud and software vendors can build solutions on one integrated mobile platform that can be used by web developers worldwide to reach multiple mobile OSes.

Mobile software solutions available at launch include: AdMob, Box.net, Bump, DoubleClick, Greystripe, Omniture (Adobe), PayPal, Salesforce, Scanbuy, Twilio, and Urban Airship.  Gaming modules include Gamekit, OpenGL (graphics), and Box2D (physics).  A full list of modules is available on the marketplace website.

“Mobile commerce is a trillion dollar opportunity … and platform ubiquity is essential to reach our customers anytime, anywhere, and in anyway,” noted Laura Chambers, Senior Director of Mobile, PayPal.  “We see Appcelerator’s reach and ease of implementation across multiple platforms as a significant advantage for our customers and the mobile industry as a whole.”

“We made a strategic choice to use Titanium early on,” noted Alex Iskold, CEO of GetGlue. “We wanted a native development that was highly efficient and that could deploy to all of the major mobile platforms. With Titanium, Get Glue found a native user experience, social integration with Facebook and Twitter and the outstanding support from the Appcelerator team. The iPhone, Android and iPad apps were built by 2 developers in just two months.”

“The future of enterprise mobility won’t be owned by any one platform, which means that vendors need to deliver an unparalleled experience across all devices," said Aaron Levie, co-founder and CEO of Box. “We are excited to be a part of Appcelerator’s new Marketplace as we both work to answer the growing demand for multi-platform support, making it easy for workers to access and share content from anywhere.”

Open to Everyone, Simple to Publish, Easy to Make Money
Marketplace is available for any developer or business who wants to publish a native or HTML5 mobile module, app template, or mobile cloud service.  Appcelerator offers self-serve tools for publishers to upload content, integrate with existing subscription services, promote assets, support and maintain offerings.  Assets can be free or paid, with a 70/30 revenue share agreement available for paid-for content.

Titanium Studio, Appcelerator’s industry-leading, cross-platform IDE, has also been updated to integrate Marketplace into the Titanium mobile development workflow.  Similar to Apple iTunes, Appcelerator will feature popular modules, staff favorites, and modules developed by Appcelerator partners.

“From day one, Appcelerator has been focused on enabling a thriving, successful mobile ecosystem,” noted Jeff Haynie, CEO of Appcelerator.  “With over 25,000 mobile applications in use by over 20 million users, we have the most successful, cross-platform developer ecosystem in the market.  The stage is set for enabling the entire mobile value-chain to scale their business by increasing their reach and adding innovation on top of the Titanium platform.  This open and extensible approach represents the future of where Titanium is going as a platform and where Appcelerator is going as a company.”

Google+ And Apple iCloud Bring Mobile Platform Battle To The Cloud

August 3, 2011 by bfreedman

Developers Embrace Apple and Google’s Moves to Transform “The App” Experience

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CALIF. and FRAMINGHAM, MASS. – August 3, 2011 – Appcelerator®, the leading mobile cloud platform for rapidly developing native mobile, desktop, and tablet applications using web technologies, and industry-leading analyst firm International Data Corporation (IDC), today announced results from a joint survey of 2,012 Appcelerator developers around the world. New analysis shows that Apple and Google are accelerating their lead in mobile by redefining mobile app engagement, loyalty, and cloud connectivity through their new Google+ and iCloud offerings.  Developers also indicate that they see Apple and Google gains in the consumer application space translating into significant traction in the enterprise space over time. The full report can be viewed at:  http://appcel.us/q3_2011_report

"Google and Apple are pushing mobile competition beyond OS platforms into the cloud and into social integration," notes Scott Ellison, IDC VP Mobile & Consumer Connected Platforms.  "This means even broader battles with major players like Amazon and Facebook, creating new competitive complexities and opportunities going forward for everyone in the mobile ecosystem."

New Apple and Google Announcements Put Mobile Cloud Opportunity on the Map

As mobile app and platform leadership continues to coalesce around Apple and Google, both players are leveraging their strengths into the cloud in different, but compelling new ways that are likely to generate long-term value and competitive differentiation for each of their respective ecosystems.  Topline findings from this quarter’s report focus on how developers eye new opportunities for applications to become more social and more connected:

  • When asked what will impact the growth and adoption of mobile the most, Apple and Google come out on top.  In order of priority:
    • Google+: 25%
    • Apple iCloud: 22%
    • Near-Field Communication: 18%
    • iOS 5 Twitter Integration: 14%
    • Android Patent Issues: 13%
    • Amazon Android Tablet Rumors: 6%
    • HP TouchPad Launch: 2%
  • Two-thirds of respondents believe that Google can catch up to Facebook in social with Google+.  When asked why, 68% of developers say that leveraging Google’s assets (eg: Search, YouTube, Maps, etc) trumps Facebook’s social graph lead.  49% say that Google shows more innovation than Facebook with new Google+ features like circles, sparks, hangouts, etc.
  • While Google+ may be the future, today 83% of developers using social in their apps say they use or are planning to use Facebook this year.  Twitter is second at 73%, followed closely by Google+ (when API is released) at 72%, LinkedIn at 30%, and Foursquare at 23%.
  • When asked what social capabilities are most important in their apps, developers said that features that encourage repeat usage and offer fresh content are more important than location checkins and photo sharing.  In order of priority, developers use social for: notifications (52%), status updates (49%), login/identity (44%), messaging (38%), news (35%), location sharing (32%), photo sharing (31%), and friend requests (26%).
  • Continuing on the real-time update theme, when it comes to iOS 5 features, developers are most interested in: improved notifications (58%), iCloud (51%), integrated Twitter support (40%), reminders (36%), and iMessage (32%).
  • iCloud may significantly disrupt the mobile cloud computing space, as developers envision a tight race between Amazon and Apple.  Developers who are using or planning to use cloud services over the next year see Amazon (51%), iCloud (50%), Microsoft Windows Azure (20%), VMWare (20%), and RedHat OpenShift (17%) as the top five players.
  • Apple and Google’s strengths in the mobile consumer space are clearly making inroads in developer perceptions of the enterprise arena.  When asked which platform is best positioned to win in the enterprise, respondents were evenly divided between iOS and Android at 44% each.  Only 7% believe Windows Phone has a shot, 4% for BlackBerry, and 2% for webOS.  Appcelerator and IDC note that enterprises are taking a more cautious approach with Android at scale due to security concerns in which case they are looking to Apple when they go beyond BlackBerry and Windows mobile deployments. In the near to medium-term, despite being equivalent from a developer perception-standpoint, Apple is leading with CIOs today when it comes to mobile deployments beyond Microsoft and RIM.
  • While neck and neck in the enterprise, perceptions on why Apple or Google might win in the enterprise are dramatically different.  We posed two reasons why each platform might win and then asked developers to rank which statements were most accurate across all platforms.  Topping the list, 30% of developers believe Android’s marketshare lead will be the key driver for success in the enterprise followed by 24% of respondents saying that Apple’s consumerization of the user experience will carry iOS into mainstream enterprise adoption.
  • With relatively few new product announcements this past quarter, platform priorities haven’t changed significantly.  iPhone remains tops as 91% say they are ‘very interested’ in developing for the device.  iPad is number two at 88%, Android pulled up a couple points with Android phone interest climbing to 87% from 85% last quarter and Android Tablets rose back to Q1 levels to 74%.  We added HTML5 mobile web as a new option to rank this quarter, which comes in fifth at 66%.  The second tier remains the same: Windows Phone (30%), BlackBerry phones (28%), BlackBerry Playbook (20%), HP TouchPad (18%), webOS Phone (12%), Symbian (7%), and MeeGo (5%) rounding out the list.  The new addition of mobile web in the middle of the pack suggests developers are seeing the increasing requirement for both a mobile app and mobile website, though the former continues to be the number one priority.

Key Trend: Mobile Leaders are Extending their Lead by Redefining the Application Experience

As OSes and consumer expectations mature, “the app” is undergoing a transformation.  Applications are becoming more engaging with real-time notifications, social, local context, and always-on cloud connectivity becoming the norm.  That “upstarts” iCloud and Google+ can challenge entrenched players Amazon and Facebook shows how quickly these new capabilities will shake up what’s possible in mobile.

As utility, loyalty, and engagement drive applications to become ‘stickier’ in our mobile virtual wallets, so too are transaction models adapting to move away from the app store and into the application.  We revisited the business model question from January to see how priorities are evolving and continue to see acceleration in strategies that monetize ongoing usage.  In January, 59% of developers said that app store sales are the number one preferred business model.  Now, that figure has dropped to 50% and developers see this trend continuing into 2012.  At the same time, in-app purchasing has increased from 42% saying in January they plan to use this model to 43% today and 50% by next year, rivaling app store sales.  Similarly, mobile commerce applications are seen as surpassing free “brand” affinity apps late this year along with an increase in near-field communication (NFC) usage next year.

Ultimately, these changes are an evolution of the mobile engagement lifecycle.  From customer acquisition/awareness to engagement, to monetization to loyalty, mobile leaders are focusing on leveraging their ubiquitous adoption levels into new areas that, in the end, significantly enlarge the overall value that’s possible on each of their platforms in the post-PC era.

A complete breakdown of these trends and a more detailed analysis is available online: http://appcel.us/q3_2011_report.
